Eligibility

What Klarna and PayPal actually check

Since the FCA brought Buy Now Pay Later under regulation on 15 July 2026, both providers must run an affordability check before approving a Pay in 3 order — not just an identity check.

01

Affordability check

Klarna and PayPal each run a proportionate check on the order value and your repayment history — this can be a soft or hard search depending on the provider and order size.

02

Credit reference agencies

Your instalment plan may be reported to UK credit reference agencies, and missed payments can appear on your credit file and affect future borrowing.

03

Who's lending

Zextons is a credit broker, not a lender. The agreement and the lending decision sit entirely with Klarna or PayPal.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Buy Now Pay Later at Zextons, in plain terms.

Does this cost anything if I pay on time?

No. Pay in 3 with either provider is 0% interest and fee-free as long as every instalment is paid on the due date. You're only charged more if a payment is missed, and neither provider charges compound interest on a missed Pay in 3 instalment.

What happens if I miss a payment?

The provider will attempt to take payment again and may charge a late fee. Continued missed payments can restrict your ability to use Buy Now Pay Later in future, may be passed to a debt collection agency, and may be recorded with credit reference agencies — this is now standard across regulated BNPL providers.

Can I complain if something goes wrong?

Yes. Since BNPL became FCA-regulated credit on 15 July 2026, you can complain directly to Klarna or PayPal, and escalate to the Financial Ombudsman Service free of charge if it isn't resolved to your satisfaction.

Will applying affect my credit score?

It can. Both providers now run affordability checks before approving an order, and depending on the provider and the order value this may leave a visible search on your credit file. Check each provider's own terms at checkout for specifics.

Is Zextons the lender?

No. Zextons acts only as a credit broker, introducing you to Klarna or PayPal. The credit agreement, the affordability decision, and the repayment schedule are entirely between you and the provider you choose.

What if I'm struggling to keep up with payments?

Tell Klarna or PayPal as early as possible — both run dedicated support for customers in financial difficulty and can pause or restructure a plan rather than just chase the missed payment. Free, independent debt advice is also available from MoneyHelper and StepChange.
